What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

Are you tired of the hassles related to eyeglasses and contact lenses? Gone are the days when you had to struggle with these methods of vision correction. Today, LASIK is an option that can help you see clearly. There have been over a million LASIK eye surgery procedures performed to date and most have had successful outcomes. No patient has ever gone blind from LASIK eye surgery.

Despite the fact that LASIK works great for many people it is certainly not the best eye surgery for every type of vision problem. A thorough eye health evaluation will need to be performed by Dr. Keith Liang at Center for Sight, in Sacramento prior to determining whether LASIK or laser vision correction would be a good option.

At Center for Sight in Sacramento, we are highly experienced and have performed many LASIK surgeries with amazing results. The procedure has helped so many of our patients achieve their best vision yet, and we want to help you too! Center for Sight is committed to providing the best LASIK care possible. What Makes You a Candidate for Lasik?

In our Sacramento LASIK office, a series of diagnostic eye tests will be performed to determine your candidacy. We will take topography maps of each eye as well as Wavefront technology images created to ensure that LASIK eye surgery is exactly what you need. Pending that you pass the required pre-operative tests, Dr. Liang will discuss the option for LASIK as a reality to correct your vision.

Vision Problems That LASIK Eye Surgery Can Correct

Nearsightedness (myopia)

Patients with nearsightedness, or myopia, are unable to focus clearly on distant objects because light rays focus before the retina of the eye. This occurs either because the cornea is too steep or the eye is too large.

Symptoms of Nearsightedness:

  • Difficulty seeing distant objects
  • Squinting in order to focus

Farsightedness (hyperopia)

Individuals with farsightedness or hyperopia are unable to see near and distant objects clearly because the cornea curvature is too flat or the eye is too small.

Symptoms of Farsightedness:

  • Difficulty seeing objects up close and at a distance
  • Reading vision problems

Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea, which should be shaped like a sphere, is instead shaped like an oval or the back of a spoon.

Symptoms of Astigmatism:

  • Difficulty seeing both near and distant objects without squinting
  • Blurred or distorted vision when reading

What Happens During the LASIK Procedure?

Our lasers are calibrated specifically for each patient, making results precise. Our surgical operating room is climate controlled, ensuring that your LASIK surgery is completely safe.

The process of LASIK surgery is accomplished in a few short steps. A local anesthetic is first applied to the eyes. A thin flap is then carefully created on the surface of the cornea, using a highly precise instrument called a microkeratome. The flap is pulled back, revealing the middle section of the cornea. A cool ultraviolet light beam, produced by our ALLEGRETTO WAVE Excimer laser, is then applied, removing tiny portions of the cornea in an effort to reshape it and improve visual acuity. Each pulse of the laser removes approximately .25 microns of corneal tissue. By comparison, the diameter of a human hair is about 50 microns. Because the laser used in LASIK surgery removes corneal matter in such small increments, extreme precision is achieved in the process. Once the cornea is corrected, the flap is replaced and the procedure is complete.

Following LASIK surgery, patients usually experience a rapid recovery due to the fact that only a tiny portion of the eye is actually operated on. Because of its efficiency and effectiveness, LASIK surgery is the most popular form of refractive surgery. It is estimated to account for 95 percent of the laser vision correction procedures that are performed today.

Our LASIK Technology

The ALLEGRETTO WAVE Excimer Laser is the next step in laser vision technology because each procedure is customized to the map of each individual eye. Prior to surgery, a patient has a wavefront exam that determines the uniqueness of each patient’s eye. Topographical maps are used to determine the steepness of the cornea. With Wavefront, this unique eye mapping determines how light is entering your eye. This allows the ALLEGRETTO WAVE Excimer Laser to apply a beam to a specific pattern unique to each eye. Applying a virtual wavefront map on the eye significantly improves myopic, hyperopic or astigmatic vision as well as the quality of vision such as contrast, sharpness, and perception.

What Our Patients Say – Nancy M.

On March 19, 2004, Dr. Liang and his staff forever changed my life by performing LASIK on both eyes. In a matter of just a few minutes, I went from a minus nine and greater prescription to 20/15! I am forever grateful to Dr. Liang and his staff. They were with me every step of the way. They made sure all of my questions were answered. They made sure I knew the risks, they made sure I knew of the possible side effects, they made sure I knew that people with a large correction like mine have an increased risk of needing a correction at some point. I can’t say enough about the whole group at the Center for Sight. I really felt that they shared in my excitement prior to the surgery and that they have rejoiced with me at the overwhelming success I have experienced since the surgery was performed. Read More Patient Testimonials.

Close-up of a Blue Eye after LASIKChoosing Laser Vision Correction or LASIK needs to be a carefully thought out and researched decision. At Center for Sight, we view this as a four-step process.

  • Self-evaluation and research
  • Free screening to determine candidacy and review the process with the surgeon.
  • Evaluation – This is a complete eye exam and evaluation to determine your specific needs and establish your surgical plan. It is at this point that you will also review a surgical consent and thoroughly discuss all risks and benefits of the procedures. You also receive all pre and post-operative instructions and the prescription for medications.
  • LASIK Surgery and Postoperative care.
